Talking Therapies

Only a quiet mind can know itself

– Will Johnson

Some of us may be fortunate enough to sit in meditation or do our bodywork practice without pain or distraction. But for many of us, finding this stillness of mind is not so easy, due to the tensions that we are holding in our body/mind which fragment our attention and restrict our energy. Applying ourselves to the practices will no doubt bear fruit, but we can also seek assistance along the way from those trained in the healing arts. For this reason we have included a Treatment Room at the Centre for both talking and touch therapies, and invite you explore the range of work that is being offered.

All the therapists using the Treatment Room hold the appropriate qualifications, insurance and membership of professional bodies.  We cannot vouch for all therapists personally, but can confirm that to be heard and to be touched are vital human needs. Please note the treatments offered are not part of the WLBC teaching programme and are not necessarily endorsed by the WLBC.

Catherine Adams is a UKCP (United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapists) accredited and registered practitioner and holds a PGDip and MSc in Humanistic Psychotherapy.

‘It can feel strange and daunting starting therapy but it’s also the gateway to change, growth, and importantly, the support that makes you feel less alone. I will help you unpack your thoughts, feelings and memories to bring clarity to your situation and explore what possibilities might be open to you.

I am also a yoga teacher with a dedicated 30-year personal practice and teacher of 15 years. I believe in the integration of mind and body and the importance of raising awareness of both when working psychotherapeutically. I offer face-to-face long-term psychotherapy to support deep inner change and short-term counselling to help you cope with specific issues, meeting in-person or online.’

Meditation

For those interested in exploring meditation we offer courses and drop-ins which provide grounding in in the meditation practices we share within the Triratna Buddhist Community.  The 2 main practices we teach are the Mindfulness of Breathing and the Metta Bhavana.

These practices are an integral part of the Triratna Buddhist tradition and of our ‘System of Practice’.

The Mindfulness of Breathing practice helps to develop awareness, integration and an understanding of the way the mind works.

The Metta Bhavana practice helps to cultivate positive emotion, compassion and an ‘opening of the heart’.

Both of these practices form the initial stages of an exploration of meaning and purpose within busy modern life.  Not only does meditation help with awareness and positive emotion it also helps to point you towards an onward journey onto the ‘path of transformation’.

We offer a hands-on and systematic approach to meditation.

Buddhism

Buddhism starts with looking at some of our basic existential dilemmas and in time leads to a felt knowledge of the nature of existence and ‘the way things really are’.

Buddhism is an ‘onward journey’ from learning meditation to the path of transformation – where our ‘narrow’ sense of ourselves is replaced by a sense of something bigger – something more creative.

For people who have learned the two meditation practices, we hold a Sangha (Community) Evening every Wednesday.  More details here.
